Sensory Activities to Try Out with Your Child

Collaborative post

Engaging children in sensory activities is an excellent way to support their development and enhance their understanding of the world. Sensory play helps with cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and social interactions, all skills that will be useful to them throughout their education and beyond. Here are some exciting and beneficial sensory activities to try out with your child.

1. Sensory Bins

Rice and Pasta Bins

Fill a large container with uncooked rice or pasta. Add small toys, scoops, and containers to encourage exploration. This activity helps develop fine motor skills and provides a calming, tactile experience.

Water Beads

Water beads are colourful, squishy, and incredibly fun. Let your child explore the beads in a container, or add them to a sensory bin with other objects like plastic animals or seashells.

2. Play Dough and Clay

Homemade Play Dough

Making play dough at home can be a fun activity in itself. Use simple ingredients like flour, salt, water, and food colouring. Once made, your child can squish, roll, and mold the dough, enhancing their creativity and fine motor skills.

Modelling Clay

Modelling clay offers a firmer texture than play dough, providing a different sensory experience. Encourage your child to create sculptures, shapes, and figures, which helps improve dexterity and hand strength.

3. Messy Play

Finger Painting

Set up a safe, washable area for finger painting. The sensation of paint on their fingers and the freedom to create messy art can be both thrilling and educational for children.

Shaving Cream Fun

Spread shaving cream on a table or a tray and let your child draw shapes, letters, or pictures. This activity is not only fun but also helps with pre-writing skills and sensory exploration.

4. Nature Exploration

Sand Play

If you have access to a sandbox or a beach, encourage your child to dig, build, and explore the texture of sand. Adding water can change the texture and open up new possibilities for play.

Nature Walks

Take your child on nature walks to collect leaves, flowers, rocks, and sticks. Discuss the textures, colours, and smells of each item, promoting sensory awareness and vocabulary development.

5. Sound Activities

Musical Instruments

Introduce your child to simple musical instruments like drums, tambourines, or xylophones. Let them explore different sounds and rhythms, which helps develop auditory processing skills.

Sound Bottles

Create sound bottles using small, clear plastic bottles filled with various materials like rice, beans, or beads. Seal the bottles securely and let your child shake them to explore different sounds.

6. Taste and Smell

Taste Testing

Create a taste-testing activity with different foods. Blindfold your child and let them guess each item by taste. This can be a fun way to explore new flavours and enhance their sense of taste.

Scented Play Dough

Add essential oils or food extracts to homemade play dough for a multi-sensory experience. Scents like lavender, peppermint, or lemon can make playtime more enjoyable and engaging.

7. Movement and Balance

Obstacle Course

Set up a simple obstacle course in your backyard or living room using cushions, boxes, and toys. Encourage your child to crawl, jump, and balance, helping them develop gross motor skills and coordination.

Yoga for Kids

Introduce your child to basic yoga poses designed for children. Yoga enhances body awareness, balance, and flexibility while promoting relaxation and mindfulness.

8. Light and Shadow Play

Shadow Puppets

Use a flashlight and your hands or simple cutouts to create shadow puppets on the wall. This activity can spark creativity and imagination while teaching about light and shadows.

Light Tables

If you have access to a light table, provide transparent or translucent objects for your child to explore. Light tables offer a unique sensory experience and can be used for various educational activities.

Sensory activities are not only fun but also essential for your child’s development. By incorporating these activities into your routine, you can help your child build important skills while enjoying quality time together. Remember to follow your child’s lead, allowing them to explore at their own pace and discover the wonders of the sensory world around them.
