How to raise a compassionate child

This is a collaborative post

Compassion. Sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings and misfortunes of others. A trait we all look for in the people we love and the people we pass by in our lives. Kindness is a quality that every child will learn and gradually practice as they grow up. This will help them create better bonds with friends, teachers and colleagues. Thankfully there are many ways to teach a child the rights and wrongs in life and how to be compassionate towards yourself and others around you. Here are a few ways to raise a compassionate child.

Believe in your child. Believe that they are capable of being kind and considerate individuals. If you only expect negativity and bad behaviour from your child, eventually you will find that they’ll live up to the name given. If you assume the best, your child will try their best to live up to that too.

Model the right behaviour. Children learn from what they see in their elders. What you do and say could be critical so ensure you are already practising compassionate behaviour. Role modelling from day 1 is the best way to ensure your child only picks up good habits.

Acknowledge kindness. When someone else does something nice such as holding a door open, be sure to point it out. This will show your child that compassion is a universal thing and expected from all.

Show your child how to help others. Donating old toys and clothes is a small but effective way of helping those who are in need. This will rapidly make your child aware of the way others feel. Be patient.

Kindness and compassion are things that are learned and moulded over time. Your child may face some hardships in life but in turn will find that compassion is what helps them through. Be a loving parent and model the best behaviour for your little one.
