How to Motivate Your Child to Learn

This is a collaborative post

The problem that lots of children have when it comes to their education is that they find classroom learning quite boring, which puts them off learning in general. The good news is that learning doesn’t have to be limited to the classroom and should extend to other aspects of life. Exposing your child to different types of learning will help them feel more passionate and motivated to succeed. Read on for some advice from a private girls’ school in Manchester.

Focus on Your Child’s Interests

Children start developing unique personalities from a very young age. As soon as you start to notice this, be sure to focus on their interests. For instance, if they seem interested in space, perhaps their next birthday present could be a telescope. If they like nature, spend lots of time outdoors and visit nature reserves and forests. By focusing on what your child is actually interested in rather than forcing them to pursue something they’re not bothered about, you will help motivate them.

Identify Your Child’s Learning Style

The way that people absorb information is different from person to person. Try to identify your child’s learning style so that you can expose them to suitable learning materials. For instance, if they are a visual learner they will prefer to read or consult images and use lots of coloured pens. Auditory learners prefer verbal instructions and would rather listen to an audiobook over reading.

Encourage Your Child to Read

Reading is fantastic for helping youngsters develop their general knowledge and critical thinking skills. If your child claims to dislike reading, perhaps they haven’t found the right genre. Take them to a bookstore or library and encourage them to choose their own book, whether fact or fiction.

Use Positive Language to Discuss Education

When talking to your child about school, refrain from saying things like “I was rubbish at history when I was your age” or “I hated maths in school”. Instead, use positive language to discuss education to help encourage a positive attitude. Motivating your child to learn is all about tuning into their personality and helping them learn about the things that they are actually passionate about. Doing so will show them that their education doesn’t have to be boring.
