Helping Your Child Become More Independent

This is a collaborative post

Gradually becoming more independent and doing more activities and tasks without a parent’s help is an important part of growing up. However, this requires confidence and self-reliance, which don’t always come naturally to children. Lots of parents want their kids to stay young forever, but it’s important to help equip them with a certain level of self-esteem so that they can eventually succeed on their own. Here are some tips from a prep school in Northampton on how you can help your child become more independent.

Give Your Child Some Chores

Nobody likes to do chores but asking your child to help with some age-appropriate tasks around the house will help them with their confidence and equip them with the skills they need to go out into the big wide world on their own. Show them how to use the dishwasher or washing machine, or how to top up the windscreen washer in your car. Ask them to check the cupboards and prepare a shopping list of items you need to buy next time you go shopping. Not only will they be able to provide a helping hand and take some of the load off you, they will also become more independent and self-reliant.

Ask Your Child for their Opinion

Asking your child what they think about certain things is an important way to help them develop independent thoughts and opinions. By showing them that you are genuinely interested in what they have to say, you will boost their self-esteem and also equip them with the skills they need to engage in interesting conversations without leaning on you.

Let Your Child Solve Their Own Problems

If you always step in and help your child with certain tasks rather than letting them try on their own, you are inadvertently telling them that you don’t believe in their abilities, which will stunt their development. With that said, let your child try and solve their own problems or overcome obstacles without you where possible.
