How do chores support my child’s overall development?

This is a collaborative post

It is common knowledge that no child likes to complete housework. They view it as something that isn’t their job or won’t bring them any major outcome. However, children completing chores at home not only gives parent’s a helping hand, but aids in their overall development.

It teaches them responsibility, independence, cleanliness, and accountability. These are all skills that will be needed once they have grown up and left home. Here is some advice from this prep school in South West London on how chores support a child’s overall development.

Helps children learn key skills

By the time your child has grown up and is ready to leave home, they need to know how to cook, clean and take care of themselves. This includes knowing how to prepare nutritious meals, wash clothes, unclog a toilet and basic outdoor maintenance.

Getting your child involved with household chores from a young age allows them to develop the skills they will need to be fully independent when they are older. After all, the last thing you want is for them to move out and have no idea how to do anything for themselves!

Responsibility

Children need to understand that there will come a time when they will have to be reliant on themselves to do simple tasks that are completed for them in the present. Have them take ownership of a particular job or space in the house, such as their bedroom, to give them a real sense of responsibility. You could even assign walking the dog to them.

Respect

One of the easiest ways to help a child respect and understand the hardship it takes to run a home is by incorporating chores into their routine. They might huff and puff at the beginning, but over time, you will notice that they begin to understand the time and effort it takes to keep a home presentable. In turn, their respect for you will only just grow after seeing how much you truly do for them.
