Pastoral care is an important element of any school as it ensures the welfare of every pupil. Without decent pastoral care, students are unlikely to reach their full potential academically, as they will be distracted by other issues. I have teamed up with a private school in Essex to help you understand pastoral care in more detail.

Form Tutors
One of the main pastoral carers at your child’s school will be their form tutor. They spend the most time with your child as they meet at least once per day, so they will be able to recognise if there are any issues. For instance, if your child seems upset or distant, their form tutor will likely be the person to notice and will be able to report this back to parents so that you can get to the bottom of it together. Perhaps the student is experiencing issues at home, troubles with their schooling, or problems with their friendship group.
Multi-Faceted Learning
Another crucial aspect of pastoral care is helping to ensure students are able to pursue their passions by providing a holistic approach to learning. Not only is this instilled in the academic curriculum but is also offered as extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities as well. This could be anything from school trips, clubs, charity fundraisers or any other range of activities.
Safeguarding
Pastoral care also involves keeping children safe and protecting them from maltreatment or anything that affects their overall health and development. It’s the school’s responsibility to identify pupils who are at risk in any way. When children feel safe, they are more likely to learn effectively. These are just a few examples of pastoral care but essentially, it’s crucial in schools because it helps to create a superb atmosphere where students feel happy and secure so that they are able to develop on an academic level, as well as a personal one.
